We move on to the next thing all too quickly
We can use these moments to build relationships, resilience and mental strength. And enjoy them more
Finishing a task, especially when you’ve had to work for it, can activate the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine and other feel‑good chemicals that reinforce motivation.
Sharing a success with others can promote oxytocin‑linked bonding, which supports trust and a sense of belonging.
Taking a brief pause after an intense deadline helps your stress system (including cortisol) start to wind down, whereas jumping straight into another demanding task can prolong stress if there’s no real recovery.
In practical terms, celebrating ‘finish moments’ helps people feel more motivated and energised for the next challenge, and shared 'finish moments' can strengthen relationships and team cohesion over time.
What do these brain chemicals and hormones do?
Dopamine is a “feel‑good” brain chemical that helps you enjoy achievements and gives you the drive to go after goals.
Oxytocin is often called the “bonding hormone” because it’s released during warm, positive interactions and helps people feel closer and more trusting.
Cortisol is the body’s main “stress hormone”; it helps you stay alert and deal with pressure, but if it stays high for too long it can leave you feeling wired and worn out.
Three wellbeing pillars to help prevent health issues
How you feel, think and cope day-to-day, including your mood, stress levels and sense of purpose and resilience in life.
How well your body works and feels, including your energy levels, movement, sleep and overall health that let you live and work comfortably.
How connected and supported you feel through positive relationships, a sense of belonging and meaningful interaction with other people.
